Description

System and Applications Engineer in the Ground Segment Architecture, Data & AI Section (OPS-GAA) of the System and Applications Engineering Division in the Ground Systems Engineering and Innovation Department, Directorate of Operations. 

The Ground Segment Architecture, Data & AI Section (OPS-GAA) is responsible for the management of systems and support activities required for ground segment software architecture, data architecture and artificial intelligence systems.

Duties

Your tasks and responsibilities will include:

  • the definition, development, maintenance, sustaining and evolution of a ground segment-wide data architecture and data governance and the associated operational platform. This includes:
    • elaboration of the architecture system requirements and the associated data governance in cooperation with the operational users and multi-mission system owners;
    • production of the software requirements specifications;
    • definition and monitoring of the related industrial procurement contracts;
    • acceptance of deliveries;
    • collection and, wherever meaningful, implementation of feedback from users of the multi-mission system as clients of the platform;
    • application of appropriate configuration management to the deployed platform;
    • support to the users as required by the various operational phases;
    • management and provision of the user support and maintenance services relating to the data architecture platform;
    • management and provision of the training services relating to the use of the data architecture platform;
  • the provision of integration, validation and operational support services relating to ground segment architecture, data architecture and artificial intelligence, including the exploitation of cloud-native data platforms, architecture and technology;
  • undertaking research, technology development activities, experimentation in the laboratory, pre-development and in-orbit demonstration in related fields to bring innovation in the area of ground segment architecture, data architecture and artificial intelligence for the benefit of missions and projects; 
  • promoting the adoption of innovative concepts, technologies and standards in the area of ground segment architecture, data architecture and artificial intelligence.

Technical competencies

Digital engineering, particularly the application of model-based system engineering technology and approaches
Cloud-native system design, with a strong background in cloud-based system build, use and execution
Data governance and management frameworks and execution approaches
Data-centric architecture, including the associated security aspects and approaches
Broadly understood AI and BI techniques, with a strong background in value-driven use case definition and data visualisation techniques and, preferably, expert knowledge of Power BI

Education

A Master's degree in a relevant domain is required for this post.

Additional requirements

A background or experience in space system ground segment architecture, particularly space mission operations processes, including the associated tooling, technologies and standards, would be an additional asset.

Recruitment will normally be at the first grade in the band (A2); however, if the candidate selected has little or no experience, the position may be filled at A1 level.
