POSITION TITLE: BIOTECH CONSULTANT

WORK LOCATION: NAIROBI, KENYA I. Background

The Global Biotech Potato Partnership (GBPP) project is using genetic engineering of three late blight resistant genes, referred to 3 R-gene stack to provides durable resistance to the disease for existing popular varieties. The 3 R-gene late blight resistant (LBR) potato is intended to directly increase crop yields and cut reliance on fungicides by up to 90%, greatly reducing human and environmental health risks while providing a resilient solution to the disease.

The LBR potato achieves inclusive and sustainable agriculture-led growth by improving the lives of smallholder farmers, both women and men, through improved crop yields, reduced fungicide input costs, and reduced exposure to harmful chemicals. The project strengthens resilienceamongpeopleandsystemsthroughimprovedcropmanagementfromseedtopost- harvest storage. In addition, the health benefits of the LBR potato contribute to a well- nourished population, especially among women and children. The targeted preferred potatoes are table varieties, a key ingredient in economic daily family meal plans. II. Objective

• Molecular diagnostics of potato diseases.

• Molecular characterization of transgenic events by PCR, RTq-PCR, Southern blot, sequencing and bioinformatics.

• Validation of event specific detection in the field.

• Perform bio-assays using artificial infection of potato plants with local strains in the biosafety glasshouse and other biosafety approved facilities.

• P.infestans effector screening.

III. Deliverables

• Molecular diagnostics of potato diseases.

• Molecular characterization of transgenic events.

• Validation of event specific detection in the field.

• Bio-assays using artificial infection of potato plants.

• P.infestans effector screening.

• Report writing and submission. IV. Selection Criteria

• BSc in Biology, Biotechnology or related field.

• Biology with background in disease diagnostics.

• At least one (1) year experience in Tissue culture preferably with roots, tubers or bananas.

• Advanced written and oral communication skills in English.

V. Time frame

• Consultancy contract will be for a maximum of 60 days.

Conditions: This is a national consultancy position limited to Kenya nationals and permanent residents only.
