Could you use your specialist expertise and knowledge as a Burns Nurse to help support the vital enhancement and development of burn care in Ukraine?

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the British Red Cross (BRC) are working in partnership to support the enhancement of a burn centre, in a city hospital in Kyiv, Ukraine.

We are seeking x4 medical professionals with specialised experience in burns (1x Burn Specialist Nurse, 1x Burn Surgical Specialist, 1x Burn Anaesthesiologist Specialist and 1x Burn Physiotherapist) and who are enthusiastic about extending their knowledge and skills within a humanitarian environment to deploy for a 6-week period.

A second “follow-up” 6-week deployment will be required within 6-months of the initial deployment. Candidates who are able to commit to both missions are strongly encouraged to apply and would be preferential. However, we will also consider different candidates for each of the two deployments, if necessary.

The Burn Specialist Nurse will play a crucial role in advancing the quality of care provided to weapon-wounded individuals and civilians with burns in Ukraine. The specialist support you will offer will be in the development of skills within the burn centre’s existing local staff (a mix of assisting in the development of formal training and mentoring) and a continuous needs assessment, contributing to learning needs and materials (including consumables, equipment, and information management needs).

Key Responsibilities

  • Enhancing the proficiency of the burn care team in Kyiv (mentoring and capacity building the local burn care specialists, thereby strengthening their clinical capabilities, specifically in improving of general in-patient care, intensive care/high dependency units, proposal of a care bundle for patient on admission/during the duration of stay/discharge and infection prevention control activities, etc.)
  • Promoting and ensuring knowledge transfer and exchange
  • Supporting the implementation of activities to ensure that the highest quality modern clinical care [available] is offered to patients and the optimal outcomes are achieved

What We Are Looking For

  • Full British medical licensure as a Nurse is essential, with a specialisation in Burns and a Nursing specialty degree (emergency rooms, intensive-care units, ward nurse, etc.), and/or sufficient experience in the domain of burn care.
  • Up-to-date, expert knowledge and skills in burn care nursing (with awareness and tolerance of the material limitations of the host environment)
  • The integral ability to analyse and assess specific educational training needs and transfer expert knowledge and skills through training programmes, workshops and seminars (with an emphasis on practical activity and hands-on training, working alongside the local staff), as well as encouraging knowledge exchange and collaborative learning among burn care professionals to improve, where necessary, and reflect the current best practices in surgical burn care
  • A systemic approach to gathering data and identifying and prioritising needs based on cost-effectiveness and realistic expectations
  • Self-awareness and sensitivities to other cultures and opinions is essential, as well as the ability to foster good and trusted relationships and be able to adapt quickly in challenging and new dynamic environments
  • Fluency in written and spoken English is a requirement (you will be working through local interpreters) but, of course, knowledge of Ukrainian would be highly advantageous
  • Previous international humanitarian and/or development experience in low-income countries would be an asset, as well as previous experience within the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement
